I wrote the book while I was deployed in Kuwait in 2004 to 2006. It was the result of a difficult phone call my wife and I had. She stated that she did not understand the math problems on our sons’ homework. After three days of trying to send me the problems in the pre-iPhone days, I saw the problem.

One day later, I emailed her the scanned copy of the solution. She was elated and told me that I should create a book to help parents of 5th through 8th grades. That idea and effort became Visual Math Basics.
